Interconnection and data centre company Equinix has announced plans for the rollout of its Cloud Exchange Fabric (EXC Fabric) capabilities across the Asia Pacific which it says will help Australian businesses establish interconnection and networking capabilities with the South East Asia region.
Equinix has scheduled the rollout for the third quarter this year and says the new inter-metro connectivity will enable customers in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, Hong Kong, Japan (Tokyo and Osaka) and Singapore to connect on demand to any other ECX Fabric customers – and allowing near real time connection to service providers, suppliers and other businesses on-demand, providing a new level of agility and flexibility.

Equinix says ECX Fabric enables customers to embrace digital transformation amid the rising demand for Interconnection Bandwidth.
Equinix cites a multi and hybrid cloud connectivity use case and says ECX Fabric customers will be able to rapidly provision connections to key service providers in Australia, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore, including Alibaba Cloud, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, IBM Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Oracle Cloud and SaaS providers like SAP – allowing them to directly and simply connect to multiple clouds in various locations through an easy to use and self-navigating portal.
According to Equinix private interconnection is a rapidly growing business practice for leading companies as their industries become increasingly digital.
Equinix notes that its Global Interconnection Index revealed that the capacity for private data exchange between businesses is outpacing the public internet, growing at nearly twice the rate and is expected to comprise nearly six times the volume of global IP traffic by 2020.
According to Equinix during this same period, Asia-Pacific is expected to grow 46% per annum to reach 1,120Tbps of installed capacity, approaching nearly a quarter (22%) of Interconnection Bandwidth globally.
And the company says that as the world's leading companies increasingly shift to digital business models, interconnection with key business partners and customers is becoming an important element of their digital supply chain.
Equinix says interconnection enables seamless, on-demand, direct and private access to virtually any counterparty—from cloud service providers to strategic business partners to networks to SaaS providers - without traversing the public internet or a WAN - an approach it says allows companies to boost application performance, reduce latency, increase security, and improve network control and visibility.
